We are deeply saddened by the passing of Burt B. Holmes, an early supporter and influential leader of the Tulsa Botanic Garden. Burt’s journey with the Garden began in 2003 when he became one of its first contributors. His dedication to the vision of a world-class botanical garden led him to join the Board of Directors, and in September 2009, he was honored to serve as Chairman.

Burt’s passion for the Garden was rooted in its bold, expansive vision. As he once shared, “I sensed from the founders that the scale of the project was larger than anything that had been projected for Tulsa for many years. It was the size and vision of a world-class botanical garden, education, and research center that interested me.” His leadership and foresight were integral to the early success of the Garden, and his involvement in countless construction, planning, and design meetings helped lay the foundation for what the Garden has become today.

Burt’s impact extended far beyond his financial contributions. As both a philanthropist and an enthusiastic cheerleader, he played a vital role in encouraging others to support the Garden and our mission. His presence and unwavering belief in the Garden’s potential were instrumental in our growth and continued success.

A passionate lover of art Burt, and his partner Mary Lee Townsend, also made significant contributions to the Garden’s artistic landscape. He gifted the granite boulder sculpture Megalithic Toy by artist Christopher Curtis, which now graces the Bost Arboretum. Additionally, the vibrant Monarch mural by Sean Kenney, made from LEGO® bricks, can be seen in the Visitor Center—another testament to Burt’s appreciation for art and beauty.

On behalf of the staff and Board of Directors of Tulsa Botanic Garden, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Burt’s family, friends, and all those who were touched by his generosity and leadership. When you visit the Garden, we encourage you to pause and reflect on the art and the spaces he helped create, as they stand as lasting tributes to his vision, dedication, and enduring legacy.
