Director of Horticulture

The Tulsa Botanic Garden is looking for a dynamic Director of Horticulture to lead a team of committed Curators and Horticulturists.  The successful candidate will have a thorough knowledge of plants and their care.  We are looking for a positive, enthusiastic person to communicate their passion to all.  As a non-profit organization we work together to promote the beauty of plants and nature while building and sustaining an exceptional botanical garden.  We are passionate about educating guests, rooting ourselves in the community and using our creative minds and skills to further the growth of the Garden.

The Director of Horticulture will be responsible for all horticultural activities, planning and development at the Garden.  This will be a key leadership role therefore proven leadership skills, horticulture knowledge and initiative will be required.

Job Duty Highlights:

  • Work with CEO to continue the enactment of a unique and compelling vision for horticulture at Tulsa Botanic Garden while adhering the design intents of each garden space
  • Develop, maintain and oversee annual budget of Tulsa Botanic Garden’s horticulture program, including the approval of all expenditures
  • Conduct regular site walks, set and prioritize goals and tasks and organize activities within each garden space
  • Lead educational garden tours and/or classes and workshops, serve as an ambassador for Tulsa Botanic Garden, including public appearances

Job Qualifications and Highlights:

  • Minimum of 3-5 years experience in Horticulture leadership
  • Minimum of 2-3 years experience in management and leadership
  • Microsoft and Windows proficiency
  • Strong plant skills and knowledge including industry trends
  • Ability to handle landscape maintenance equipment
  • Proven initiative and passion for work
  • Motivated and Organized
  • Confident decision making
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Valid Oklahoma Pesticide Applicators License

Working Conditions and Environmental Exposures:

The position will at times be a seated, indoor office position with intermitted standing and walking.  At other times this position will be an active, outdoor position that will include repetitive bending, stooping and squatting with occasional climbing, kneeling or crawling.  General duties of the position will require manual dexterity such as grabbing, twisting and digging as well as the ability to handle small seeds and manipulate and operate hand tools.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee will have exposure to outside weather conditions and uneven, unpaved terrain.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but could be very loud depending on the task (appropriate PPE should be properly worn during the tasks).  The employee will be asked to lift and move 50+ pounds.

Horticulturist (2 positions open)

The Tulsa Botanic Garden is looking for a hard-working and passionate Horticulturist to assist with maintaining the high-profile landscapes of the Garden. We are looking for a positive, self-driven, team-focused person with a willingness to take the initiative.

Job Duty Highlights:
• Assists with all aspects of the Garden including planting, pathways, water features and irrigation systems
• Work as part of a team to install new plantings and seasonal change-outs
• Assist with implementing IPM (Integrated Pest Management), pest scouting, and disease prevention, including the use of pesticides and herbicides
• Assist in the proper documentation of all new plantings, removals, deaths and placing accession tags and display labels
• Maintain and convey a working knowledge of ornamental plants, including trees, shrubs, vines, herbaceous perennials, annual bedding plants, and tropicals
• Perform physical gardening work that is associated as part of a routine outdoor job in horticulture in the south-central U.S.
• Assist with special events and programs as needed, including seasonal nights and weekends

• Previous Horticulture experience
