SUMMARY:Writing Poetry at the Garden
DESCRIPTION:Rescheduled from April 17 \nPoets have always sought out nature as inspiration for their poems and as a place in which to write them. As a celebration of National Poetry Month\, join Nimrod International Journal and the Tulsa Botanic Garden for a free writing workshop that will explore the connections of poetry and nature. \nOn Sunday\, May 22nd\, at 2:00 p.m.\, Nimrod will host “The Path Less Taken: Writing Poetry at the Garden” on the grounds of the Tulsa Botanic Garden. Led by Nimrod poetry editor Cynthia Gustavson\, author of the collection Between Tahlequah and Tulsa and nine other books on poetry\, workshop attendees will explore the Garden’s A.R. and Marylouise Tandy Floral Terraces and then take a walk around the one-mile Cross Timbers Nature Trail. Cynthia will discuss the metaphors that are used to describe nature’s sights and sounds\, and how to engage all the senses during the nature walk. The group will stop often to take notes and then share them with one another. Upon returning to the Center\, participants will then be led through exercises to help write their discoveries into poetry that enables others to experience them as well. As Cynthia says\, “We will not only ‘find’ nature\, but will be ‘found’ by it.” \n The walk and workshop will take approximately two hours and will be held rain or shine. Attendees should wear good walking shoes and bring something to write on and with\, and are also encouraged to bring water\, bug spray\, and sunhats. The workshop itself is free and open to the public. (regular Garden admission applies). \nAttendees may sign up until the day of the workshop\, but advance RSVPs are encouraged. To sign up\, call (918) 289-0330 or (918) 631-3080 or email with your name\, address\, phone number\, and email. \nNOTE: Any decision to cancel due to dangerous weather will be made by noon on May 22 and announced via Nimrod Journal and Tulsa Botanic Garden’s social media.
