Handyman/Handyperson and Grounds Assistant (full time, exempt)

 

Reports to: President and CEO

Supervisory Responsibility: None

FLSA Status: Exempt

Full Time Position:  40 hours per week, health/dental/retirement benefits, paid holidays, paid time off (sick, vacation, and personal leave)

 

Position Summary:  The Handyman/Handyperson and Grounds Assistant will work through the President and CEO on various projects related to the maintenance and upkeep of the physical and garden infrastructure of Tulsa Botanic Garden.

 

Tulsa Botanic Garden seeks a qualified individual for an exciting, full time position entitled “Handyman/Handyperson and Grounds Assistant.” Applicants for this position will join a team of dedicated professionals working diligently to build a dynamic new botanic garden for Tulsa, Green Country, and beyond. Tulsa Botanic Garden is a growing 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Tulsa, Oklahoma with 170 acres of land located in southeastern Osage County, 8 miles north of downtown Tulsa. Primary duties of this position include:

  • General maintenance of Garden infrastructure, including buildings, small equipment, fences, appliances, etc.
  • Troubleshooting and solving problems, especially in emergency situations
  • Procuring needed tools and supplies
  • Assessing and prioritizing projects based on need, liability, and schedule
  • Repairing damaged, worn-out, or obsolete items – wooden, metal, plastic
  • Performing cosmetic work on various structures
  • Building and/or upgrading basic structures – shelving, small storage structures, windbreaks
  • Conducting light plumbing, electrical, and HVAC work as needed
  • Annual winterizing duties
  • Applying preventative treatments for termites and other structurally damaging pests
  • Disassembly and proper disposal of non-needed materials and waste
  • Assisting with drainage projects
  • Applying herbicides to fencerows
  • Occasional mowing and string-trimming
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Qualifications for this position include:

  • Friendly demeanor and positive attitude
  • 3 or more years’ experience in handiwork
  • Excellent trade skills – woodworking and carpentry, electrical, plumbing, cosmetic work,…
  • Basic math and computer skills
  • Creative problem-solving skills
  • General landscaping skills – mowing, string-trimming, herbicide application
  • Experience with handiwork trade tools and equipment
  • Experience with greenhouse systems preferred
  • Experience in operating basic garden equipment (tractor, mowers,…)
  • Familiarity with the outdoors and/or gardens would be favorably considered
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Multi-tasking and organizational abilities
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.
  • Safety-minded attitude
  • Flexibility and capability to adapt to changes in daily routine
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license

VisitoServiceAssociate (part-time,non-exempt)

 Reports to: Member Services Coordinator

Supervisory Responsibility: None

FLSA Status: Non-exempt

Part-Time Position: Not to exceed 25 hours per week, no benefits. 

Position Summary: This position acts as a frontline ambassador for Tulsa Botanic Garden with a focus on creating enjoyable and positive experiences for all visitors, while also efficiently handling hourly and

daily work duties.  Visitor Services Associates work at the Garden from 9:30AM to 5:30PM Tuesday through Sunday, with additional hours available on Thursday evenings (until 8:30PM) and on other special occasions.

Primary duties of this position include:

• Processing all admission transactions and functions; handling cash and credit transactions with a high level of accuracy and according to established policies; reconciling cash drawer at the end of the day

• Greeting and orienting Tulsa Botanic Garden guests and providing information about the Garden, including its features, programs, and ongoing development
• Opening and closing of Visitor Center and/or other facilities (including the Mabee Grange), including locking and securing of all gates, doors, etc., adjusting HVAC controls, preparing and cleaning facility/ies for visitors and volunteers
• Answering questions about Garden memberships, providing information, taking payments, and forwarding information as needed for follow-up by other Garden personnel to guests
• Serving as an ambassador for the Garden at outreach events
• Gathering feedback from visitors to share with management while working to solve daily issues
• Assisting with event functions during special events
• Occasionally working with volunteers
• Other duties as assigned

 

Qualifications for this position include:

• Excellent customer/visitor service relations, with prior work experience in this sector preferred
• Friendly demeanor and positive attitude

• Understanding of point of sale (POS) transactions on a computer system

• Flexibility of schedule to work shifts including weekends, evenings, and holidays

• Basic math, computer, and cash handling skills

• Ability to work independently

• Familiarity with the outdoors and/or gardens would be favorably considered

• Excellent verbal communications skills

• Possession of a valid driver’s license

• Multi-tasking and organizational abilities

• Flexibility and capability to adapt to changes in daily routine and to visitors’ needs

• Intermittent standing and walking required

• Ability to lift 30 pounds

Events Assistant (multiple openings, part time, non-exempt)

Reports to:  Programs and Events Director

Supervisory Responsibility:  None

FLSA Status: Non-exempt

Part-Time Seasonal Position:  Not to exceed 20 hours per week, no benefits.

Position Summary: This position will be responsible for assisting with public and private events and programs held at the Garden from set-up, through the event, until tear-down and clean-up. Programs and events will be scheduled at varying hours, including weekdays, evenings, and weekends.

Tulsa Botanic Garden seeks qualified individuals for several seasonal part-time positions entitled “Events Assistant” commencing employment on March 15, 2018. Applicants for these positions will join a team of dedicated professionals working diligently to build and maintain a dynamic new botanic garden for Tulsa, Green Country, and beyond. Tulsa Botanic Garden is a growing, 501(c)(3) nonprofit, based in Tulsa, Oklahoma, with 170 acres of land located in southeastern Osage County, 8 miles from downtown Tulsa. Primary duties of this position include setting up for events, assisting with the successful and professional execution of events, and seeing these events through to completion with tear-down and clean-up. Adaptability to the dynamic nature and wide variety of types of events offered at the Garden is requisite.

Specific duties include the following:

•Setting up tables, chairs, outdoor bar areas, outdoor food areas, fire pits (and managing campfires)
•Interacting professionally with Garden guests and private event clients•Installing temporary lighting
•Hanging decorations and temporary signage
•Preparing materials for classes and workshops
•Setting up materials for kid’s crafts
•Consulting with Events Director about logistics for each event
•Assisting with Garden closing and lock-up procedures

Qualifications for this position include:

•Strong interpersonal and communication (verbal and written) skills
•Friendly and helpful demeanor
•Good judgement skills regarding visitor safety and facility management
•Ability to work outside in the elements
•Familiarity with the outdoors, nature, plants, and different areas of Tulsa Botanic Garden (including a willingness to learn)
•Adaptability to a wide spectrum of event types
•Ability to follow directions well and work independently
•Familiarity with basic electrical, mechanical, and garden tools
•Ability to lift 50 lbs. and physically work within a limited timeframe
•Flexibility of schedule and willingness to work late hours
